This chapter focuses on the childhood of H. P. Lovecraft, who was born at 9 a.m. on 20 August 1890, at 194 Angell Street, on what was then the eastern edge of the East Side of Providence. His father fell ill in April 1893 and remained in Butler Hospital in Providence until his death in July 1898. The hospitalization of Winfield Scott Lovecraft brought the two-and-a-half-year-old Howard more closely than ever under the influence of his mother, his two aunts, his grandmother Robie, and, especially, his grandfather Whipple Van Buren Phillips.
