This chapter focuses on lawyer and politician Sir Stafford Cripps. Cripps was elected to the House of Commons in January 1931. In 1934 he responded to the appeal of the North Wales miners to represent them at the Gresford Inquiry. His conduct of their case, a forensic triumph even by his own standards, occupied him concurrently with some of his bitterest battles for political survival, which were themselves the product of his uncompromising temperament.
