The economic growth enjoyed by France after World War II brought unprecedented levels of affluence to the whole society. Purchasing power and standards of living improved dramatically, while production increased along with goods and services. Elsa Triolet's 1959 novel, Roses à crédit, the first part of the trilogy L'âge de nylon, highlights the use of credit for consumer purchases and features a female protagonist who finds personal, even idiosyncratic, fulfillment in consumer goods. The emergence of consumer credit was a necessary condition of France's post-war recovery, with wide-ranging social and ideological implications. In the consumer society, the credit facility is an integral and essential part of economic development. Credit reaffirms the link between consumption and production that characterises modern economies.
