This introductory chapter discusses the emergence of future-war fiction in the last decades of the nineteenth century. It reviews several works from the twentieth century, including Philip George Chadwick's The Death Guard (1939); Mordecai Roshwald's Level 7 (1959), Eugene Burdick and Harvey Wheeler's Fail-safe (1962), and H. G. Wells' The War That Will End War (1914).
