This chapter examines John Wyndham's breakthrough novel, The Day of the Triffids (1951). It focuses on the evidence that, for a period, the novel was envisaged as the central volume of a future-history trilogy, the final volume of which involved the recovery of information about a catastrophic exchange of nuclear weapons between Russia and the USA, which might be understood as constituting World War III.

Keywords:   John Wyndham, The Day of the Triffids, future-war fiction, nuclear war
