This introductory chapter discusses the theme of this volume which is about the history the ‘invisible’ English Diaspora during the period from 1500 to 2010. This volume attempts to locate the hidden English Diaspora and analyses the many and varied reasons why the English have not been counted among the world's many Diasporas. It suggests that the English people were not considered not have experienced a Diaspora because they played a founding role in forging colonial societies around the globe and they created distinctive religious, social, and cultural traditions and organizations in the new worlds in which they settled.
