This introductory chapter discusses the theme of this volume which is about textuality and innovation in travel writing and the impact of globalization. It explains that the genre of travel writing has offered writers the possibility of narrative experimentation and textual innovation and suggests that the expression of progressive political content in contemporary travel writing must be combined with innovative writing techniques to produce new textualities of travel for a new politics of mobility. This volume examines experimental travel texts in order to determine how contemporary travel writing is different from its predecessors and how innovative travel writers respond to globalization.
