This chapter examines the paradoxical combination of the personal and the general in Roland Barthes' inaugural lecture at the Collège de France in 1977 titled Leçon and the lecture ‘Longtemps, je me suis couché de bonne heure…’ given in Paris and New York the following year. It suggests that while the lectures reveal Barthes' tension at the Collège he was able to use it to his advantage. This chapter explains that both lectures employed uncertainty as an enabling principle.
