Roland Barthes at the Collège de France
Liverpool University Press

This chapter examines Roland Barthes' La Préparation du roman lecture series at the Collège de France. It explains that the first Préparation du roman course subtitled De la vie à l'oeuvre (December 1978–March 1979) highlighted Barthes' desire in his previous intellectual work and his concern with oppressive public expectation. The second course subtitled L'Oeuvre comme volontéfocused on the examination of the material, real-world conditions that are necessary in order for him to be able to write his proposed work.
