This chapter gives introductory context for the connections made in the book between postcolonial studies and World Englishes. It considers the history of the spread of English around the world, as well as the language’s present situation. It then considers the background for the book’s specific approach to English, exploring the different assumptions underlying research, and the different traditions on which it draws. In particular, the chapter considers the way in which the book is (and must be) interdisciplinary. Finally, the chapter foreshadows the book as a whole through considering the fundamental issue of communication.
