97 pages in length, Vastey’s Le système colonial dévoilé was originally published in October 1814, in the capital of the Kingdom of Hayti, Cap-Henry. This is the first English translation of Vastey’s trailblazing critique of colonialism and the transatlantic slave system. Accompanying the translation of Vastey’s anticolonial masterpiece is an extensive footnote apparatus: tracking over a hundred references in Colonial System, these footnotes provide invaluable information regarding Vastey’s use of textual sources (from classical epics to works of contemporary travel literature, from colonial discourse in defence of slavery to abolitionist texts of the Radical Enlightenment).

Keywords:   Baron de Vastey, Le système colonial dévoilé, colonial discourse, travel literature, abolitionism, Enlightenment
