This chapter discusses the deposition of a crypto-Jew named Pedro Rodríguez, alias Manuel Sarmiento, made before the Inquisition in Valdepeñas in December of 1639, which brought to notice the Judaizing activities of upwards of ten members of the Alvares family. These family members include Manuel Alvares, father of Baltazar, and Manuel's brother Santiago Luis; Violante de Paz, wife of Santiago Luis, and five of their six children; José de Castro, brother of Violante; and Isabel Luis and her husband Andrés de Narváez. The chapter then looks at the life of this Portuguese crypto-Jewish family, showing the tenacity with which it clung to its ancestral traditions. It had not forgotten them through generations of active persecution, suppression, and enforced conformity. The chapter demonstrates the Judaism preserved by the family, the religious practices which they secretly maintained, and about the particular customs that were widespread amongst the crypto-Jews of the Iberian Peninsula at that period.
