Commentary
This chapter includes the commentary on Appian's Wars of the Romans in Iberia or the Iberike. It mentions the Pyrenean range of mountains, which Appian used to provide a geographic and ethnographic note and set the scene for the arrival of the Romans. Appian considered the importance of geographical setting in emphasizing the immensity of the achievement of the Romans and starting his work with a survey of the territory and people included within the empire. Appian's view on the location of the Iberian Peninsula, as is common among ancient writers, places it further north and on a different axis from geographical reality. It also talks about the Tyrrhenian sea, which is the term Appian uses to refer to the northern part of the western Mediterranean.
