There are significant differences in the organisational constraints universities operate under, when compared to commercial R&D, that enable them to build specialised knowledge bases. For example, they typically have a higher degree of flexibility in the overall size and shape of their staff base. Although university staff typically work within the context of year long workplans, and are reasonably inflexible within these workplans, universities as institutes can re-shape their staffing much more flexibly than most companies, recruiting specialised and skilled talent into two or three-year fixed term postdoctoral contracts. A simple comparison is presented.
