‘A No-Woman’s-Land’? Exile and Errance in Michèle Rakotoson’s Juillet au pays: chroniques d’un retour à Madagascar
Madagascan author Michèle Rakotoson differs considerably to the other five authors analysed in the book in terms of the motives of her exile: she is the only author who was forced to leave her birthland in 1983 for political reasons, to escape persecution because she actively opposed the authoritarian regime of President Didier Ratsiraka. Chapter Five discusses the political implications of her exile as expressed in Juillet au pays: chroniques d’un retour à Madagascar(2007), arguing that her initial exile from Madagascar to France and her return journeys arise because of her opposition to the political regime in power at that particular time. The narrative persona describes her experiences in terms of errance rather than exile, but, as this chapter demonstrates, these concepts display distinct overlaps regarding the sentiments of alienation and otherness they engender.
