This chapter focuses on Andrzej Żbikowski's Żydzi krakowscy i ich gmina w latach 1869–1919 (The Jews of Kraków and their Community 1869–1919). In this, a revised form of his 1990 doctoral dissertation, Żbikowski has undertaken an exhaustive description of the Kraków gmina (Jewish community) over fifty years. It is divided thematically rather than chronologically. The opening chapters discuss the demographic, professional, and ideological divisions within the gmina. The latter chapters acquaint the reader in more detail with the basis for the gmina's functions and with the political convictions of its members. Żbikowski then goes on to examine the finances and institutions of the gmina, its charitable and educational activities, and the relations between the Christians and the Jews of Kraków. He concludes with a description of the gmina's response to the convulsions of the First World War.
