This chapter recalls a conference that Isaac Mayer Wise held in Cincinnati. Wise had criticized it, but he had not broken with it. He had indicated that he considered himself free to call a conference of congregations, and without stating that he had forgone that right he associated with the Board of Delegates on the footing that it was theologically neutral; but just as little did he cease to count himself as the friend of progress, numbered among the Reform rabbis of America and ready to take a hand in shaping their programme. What they thought of his blowing hot and cold over Philadelphia and his new love for the Board of Delegates is not difficult to guess. In view of the temperament of the parties, and in view of the absence of any general inhibitions against forthright public attacks on each other, it looks as if each side was waiting for the other to offer the casus belli.
