Mishael Porembski

Liverpool University Press

This chapter highlights Mishael Porembski's film Burning Questions. Burning Questions is a thoughtful and at times deeply moving personal meditation set within the vexing American context of Polish-Jewish tensions over what occurred between these two communities in Nazi-occupied Poland. The documentary tells some of the Polish Catholic story of the Holocaust, and in this sense it is an apologia. Mishael, through her father, brings the often overlooked or misrepresented Polish perspective to the screen. She then moves into the larger problem of Polish-Jewish wartime relations and tries to find hope. For that she deserves to be highly commended. However, it must be noted that while enquiring into the Polish Catholic ‘Holocaust’, the producer skirts some difficult issues. The distinction between Jewish and Polish victimization could have been drawn much more sharply.
