Writing Jewish History in the Postmodern Climate

Writing Jewish History in the Postmodern Climate

(p.1) Introduction Writing Jewish History in the Postmodern Climate
How Jewish is Jewish History?

Moshe Rosman

Liverpool University Press

This introductory chapter clarifies what general challenges postmodern thought and practice pose for Jewish history, and on what basis Jewish historiography can meet them. Clarification requires engaging with the subject of postmodernism, notoriously associated with opaque jargon and tangled expression. In addition, the study of Jewish history — indeed, all of Jewish studies — has come into question as a result of the postmodern approach. The chapter considers why having certainties such as the very existence of postmodernism and the accepted method by which it is practised becomes problematic. It then turns to how one can overcome such problems. Perhaps here, in a Jewish context, it can be made to speak, as the Torah is said to do, ‘in the language of humans’.
