Messages and Values

(p.27) Messages and Values
Studying Pan's Labyrinth

Tanya Jones

Liverpool University Press

This chapter addresses the questions on what a film is 'about' and provides an analysis of messages and values within a film text as a process of considering its constituent elements. It explains how a film may profess to be 'about' an idea or event, as well as invariably discuss other issues. It also points out the importance of keeping messages and values open to both a film's potentially shifting focus and to one's own response to it. The chapter offers one interpretation of the messages and values of Pan's Labyrinth. It discusses the oppression represented in Pan's Labyrinth that can be ideological, emotional, and psychological.
