The Thing

This chapter discusses the initial reception of audiences to the horror film The Thing. At the time, horror films were considered 'video nasties,' which journalists and news networks spoke ill of, implying that such films could influence its viewers to behave immorally. The chapter mentions the case of two serial rapists who had cited The Thing as a major influence on their behaviour. The chapter describes The Thing as the ultimate 'clunker to cult to classic' movie journey. Because even though the film initially received poor critical and commercial reception, it bounced back so spectacularly that it became one of the most highly regarded productions from the 'Body Horror' cycle of films during the 1980s.
