Abstract

This exploration of the Italian background of The Cantos provides indispensable keys to an understanding of a major American epic. Bacigalupo follows Pound’s steps through Italian cities and landscapes, his contacts with writers from Dante to his contemporaries, his own writings in (and translations from) Italian, and his final introspective years between Rapallo and Venice—all of which is considered for the light it casts on his work.
