This chapter discusses the history of business in Chile from 1850 to 1945. It shows that the history of business has been a marginal component in the development of Chile. The combined production of economists and scholars presents a major turning point for economic historiography and for business history. It illustrates that the social and political gravitation of the landowners remains the central theme in the agricultural sector in Chile. Mining offers the principal foundation for interpretations which stress the vigorous growth in the Chilean economy. This chapter reveals that the successful completion of research on business history presents a number of difficulties.

Keywords:   business, Chile, economic historiography, agricultural sector, mining, Chilean economy
