This chapter explains the field of business history in Peru. It observes that the role played by foreign companies, the nature of the local business elite, and social change in the sierra have dominated research on business in Peru after the Pacific War. It summarises the balance of research on the state — foreign firms — Peruvian firms triangle is in order. It is followed by the advances in interpretation of business structures and strategies. This chapter suggests that many of the problems which hindered the growth of business history in Peru resulted from the increasingly tragic history of the country, its social conflicts, and the political and economic incompetence of successive governments.
