Diplomats and Diplomacy
Diplomats and Diplomacy
This chapter discusses the activities of the Italian diplomats at the court of Charles the Bold. These Italian diplomats were bound together by their mutual friendships or rivalries, and they were distinguished from the other Italians by the special honour with which they were treated by the duke and his courtiers, and by the precedence accorded them on ceremonial occasions. The duke's attitude towards them also provides a yardstick by which to measure not only his fondness for Italians but also the extent to which he was influenced in one specific area by Italian modes of thought.
