This chapter focuses on the idea of the discourse of modernity. It discusses the general problem of the constitution and organisation of society in the discourse of modernity and focuses on the crisis discourses marking the different phases in the discursive construction of modern society. These crisis discourses include the early modern rights discourse, which concentrated on the problem of violence; the justice discourse, activated by a series of debates about the problem of poverty; and finally, the responsibility discourse, generated by debates that deal with the problem of nature.
