This chapter discusses the rights discourse generated by debates about violence and the political survival of society. First, it describes the historical framework within which the violence debates developed in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. It then discusses the institutional and non-institutional settings where debates are conducted. Finally, the chapter examines the issue of the survival of society in its political environment.
