Global Media, Cultural Change and the Transformation of the Local: The Contribution of Cultural Studies to a Sociology of Hybrid Formations
This chapter examines the processes of ‘glocalization’ in the reception and appropriation of American media products. It describes forms of interpretation and consumption in which popular culture is expressed as difference, syncretism and hybridity. Through an ethnographic investigation of the hip-hop culture, the chapter shows how hybrid formations emerge.
