This chapter describes the mining disaster that occurred in the early morning of 22 September 1934. At about 2.00 a.m., when most of the men were having their ‘snapping’, the mid-shift meal break, there was a loud explosion like the sound of a burst pipe. Their lamps went out, the air became suddenly warmer and they were hit by a shower of dust and small stones. Only six men made it out of the Dennis Section alive.
