This chapter analyses the Juan Goytisolo's novel Señas de identidad. It examines the way the text of this novel by looking at the narrative process, chronology, self–conscious features, and the theme of the language. It suggests that Señas de identidad manifests an ambiguous status because it rejects traditional mimesis while preserving many mimetic features and it tends towards narrative self–consciousness without assuming its consequences fully. This chapter also contends that while the novel is characterised by the features of realism it also introduced superimposed self–conscious features on to that realist base.
