(p.39) Part One: The ‘Mental Exercises’
Michael Faraday's Mental Exercises
Liverpool University Press

This chapter presents the complete text of the ‘Class Book, for the Reception of Mental Exercises’ in which the essay-circle's work was copied up by the members. The manuscript has been transcribed as far as possible, without any editorial corrections: errors, including misspellings, absent or incorrect punctuation, repeated words and so on, are preserved. The transcription is annotated with footnotes of three kinds. The first kind simply records manuscript corrections of scribal or (less frequently) authorial errors, such as the addition of a letter to correct a misspelling. The second kind of footnote provides information on sources or persons quoted or referred to in the contributions. The third kind of footnote is far more speculative: these attempt to give some context for usages, borrowings and clichés.
