This chapter examines the mining families of south Lancashire during the period of rapid increase in coal production in the eighteenth century, and explores the ways in which coalmining attracted workers in increased numbers. First, it describes how pits are organised and remunerated and how the colliery labour force grew large and employment became regular, and then examines the colliers' wages and the impact of wages and working practices on the mobility of colliers.
