This chapter assesses the role of towns within the British migration system of north-west England from the eighteenth to the twentieth centuries. Analysis is based on the collected residential histories for individual migrants. The data set consists of information on 2,251 individuals who made a total of 8,568 residential moves between 1750 and 1930 with an origin and/or destination in Lancashire and Cheshire.
