The Lure of Gold

The Lure of Gold

34 The Lure of Gold
Monstrous Adversary
Liverpool University Press

This chapter details Oxford's failed investment in an expedition in search of gold. The expedition, organized by Martin Frobisher, sought to recover 500 tons of ore at an estimated cost of £15,000. Oxford invested £3000 in the venture by raising credit in the form of a bond. On 25 September 1578, exactly four months from the day of their setting out, Frobisher's ships made landfall in Cornwall; Frobisher himself brought samples overland to Richmond and thence to London, where an assay found them worthless. Oxford had not a penny to show for his £3000 investment, and 29 September, the due–date of his bond, was at hand.
