Anne Vavasor
Anne Vavasor
This chapter describes the birth of Oxford's child with Anne Vavasor. On 21 March 1581 Anne gave birth to Oxford's son, baptized as Edward Vere. Oxford took no responsibility for his upbringing or education. The boy was raised by his mother, who despite a besmirched reputation was a woman of courage and character. In later years her son became a protégé of Oxford's inestimable cousin, Sir Francis Vere. The chapter also discusses Oxford's arrest on 29 April.
