Mistress Elizabeth Trentham
Mistress Elizabeth Trentham
This chapter describes Oxford's marriage to Elizabeth Trentham, daughter of Thomas and Jane Trentham of Rocester, Staffordshire. On the marriage market for at least ten years, Elizabeth was not only much older than Anne Cecil had been at the time of her marriage, but far more independent. The wedding received royal recognition in an entry dated 23 November 1592 recording the Queen's gift of a gilt bowl with a cover at Oxford's marriage Mrs Elizabeth Trentham. The wedding itself may be dated to 27 December 1591 (at the latest) from a record of the Queen's gift to the new Countess.
