The economic recession in Sweden from the 1970s to the 1990s led to a rethinking of the role of national planning. This chapter discusses the emergence of national planning in Sweden, describes the current political and administrative framework for the planning system, and also examines government policies and intervention in social welfare, environmental issues, housing, and infrastructure development.
