This chapter examines the protagonists or the hero in the works included in Dr. Faustroll's library. It explores Belle Epoque treatments of the literary hero and Alfred Jarry's own approach. It highlights the contrasting style of the livres pairs authors in avoiding or emphasising a central character. This chapter also considers different types of heroes which include the decadent hero and the aggressive individualist and describes the symbolist hero who is a figure out of the ordinary and who inhabits a textual universe that is created to be in tune with him.
