This introductory chapter discusses the postmodern global city thesis and explains why the city and globalisation debates are pertinent to Liverpool. It explores the various attempts at regenerating cities like Liverpool and examines importance of ‘glocalisation’, a process describing the new global-local intermingling or interpenetration. The chapter also discusses the role of business and government in the regeneration and governance in the city.
