Ethnicity, Nation and Civilization

Ethnicity, Nation and Civilization

(p.48) Chapter 3 Ethnicity, Nation and Civilization
Social Theory and Later Modernities
Liverpool University Press

This chapter, which offers a hypothetical analysis of the connections between ethnicity, nation, and culture and civilization to answer the Kurdish question, also examines the invention of the Turkish Nation and the aftermath of its creation. The examination of the birth of the Turkish Nation is divided into six parts: first, the delineation of the Turks from a civilizational perspective; second, the nationalization process; third, the ban on Tarikats; fourth, a thesis on Turkish History; fifth, language reform; sixth, education reform. The chapter concludes that to answer the Kurdish question, a deeper analysis is needed which also considers the relation between state and society.
