State, Society and Economy: Tensions between Liberty and Discipline
State, Society and Economy: Tensions between Liberty and Discipline
This chapter analyses the connections between state, society and the economy, arguing that their connections can be configured in several ways, which supports the varieties of modernity. It tracks down the beginning of the relations between the three by tracing the insidious build-up of tension starting at the Kemalist State, and gains momentum through the rise of a society, reaching a pivotal moment at the rise of the economy. Through the tension, economic issues, and the lack of a clearly defined civilization, room is provided for innovation, such as a new sense of Turkish modernity.
