Islam and Modernity: Radical Openness to Interpretation
Islam and Modernity: Radical Openness to Interpretation
This chapter aims to study the connection between Islam and modernity in the Turkish experience. It uncovers the relations between the two through arguing that Turkish society indicates both the plurality of Islam and the different designs of modernity. The relations are pointed out through viewing Islam and Modernity as projects (of European Enlightenment) and by analysing different forms of Islam and Modernities. The chapter concludes by emphasizing that Islamism should not be seen as constituting a break with modernity, but rather viewed as a different project of modernity.
Keywords: European Enlightenment, Islamism, Turkish society, totalitarian project, Kemalism
