Kemalism and Islamism on the ‘Female Question’
Kemalism and Islamism on the ‘Female Question’
This chapter studies the Islamist women in Turkey for the purpose of understanding why some women appear to be removed from the conception of freedom as part of modernity. It aims to compare the Kemalist modernity view on women with the Islamic view, with the intention that this will lead to insight into the contradictory elements in Islamist women's rejection of modernity. Through the comparison, the study discovers that Islamist women argue for an Islamist regime, but on the other hand, accept the opportunities offered by Kemalist modernity. The chapter concludes with the supposition that women should consider whether they would grieve for the existing form of modernity in Turkey if the Islamist modernity prevailed.
