Werner Sombart

Liverpool University Press

This chapter presents a lecture by Professor Dr Werner Sombart regarding technology and culture. Sombart started off his lecture by explaining the significance and the components of what makes technology, such as the use of instruments, how it encompasses skill and knowledge, its ties with economy and so on. In regards to culture, Sombart focused more on how culture expresses itself rather than what culture is. He connected both by stating that technology affects culture and culture affects technology. He elaborated further on their connection by raising such propositions as that economy is a function of technology and that culture is a function of technology. The lecture aimed to bring more attention to the objectivity between technology and culture, rather than on cultural valuation.

Keywords:   technology, economy, culture, technology and culture, functions of technology, cultural valuation
