The New Politics of Sinn Féin

The chapter discusses the seeming conclusion of the Republican journey and its shift from fanatic terrorists to democratic politicians. The ‘repackaging’ of the Provisionals with the skepticism of the Unionists is also examined, as are the effects of the electoral process on the contradictions in Provisionalism and how these are becalmed. The methods by which the Republican ideology was adapted are reviewed alongside some setbacks and benefits as reflected in the communal divisions established through the course of the peace process and normalization. The role of the Provisional movement in the operation of instilling political stability in the British state is also analysed.

Keywords:   Unionists, Republican ideology, Provisional movement, normalization, reunification, peace process, electoral success
