This chapter presents the author's family background. He describes the respective families of his father and mother, Richard and Agnes Irene, and how they met. The author also recounts his earliest memories of living over a bank in Cressington, a suburb of Liverpool; his aunts on his mother's side who lived nearby; and his father's fondness for the novels of Sir Walter Scott.
