This chapter focuses on the author's research on the family trees of patients suffering from porphyria variegata. His efforts yielded a master family tree, showing how the forebears of thirty-two large porphyric groups in the early part of the nineteenth century all go back to Gerrit Jansz, who came to the Cape in 1685 as one of the first free citizens or burghers; and Ariaantje Jacobs, one of several orphans sent from Rotterdam to be wives for the first free burghers at the Cape. Gerrit Jansz van Deventer or his wife, Ariaantje Jacobs van Rotterdam, carried the gene for porphyria variegata, and carriers of the gene multiplied in the same way as the number of men holding the name Van Rooyen or Van Deventer.
