One of the main reasons why the Irish government and the Department of Health decided to establish the Medico-Social Research Board was to look at the medical and social problems of the country, and the need to obtain much more detailed information about why people were admitted to hospital in Ireland, the nature of the illness, the length of stay, and so on. This chapter details the author's activities as director of the Medico-Social Research Board in Ireland.
