(p.195) Chapter 21 China
The Turnstone
Liverpool University Press

This chapter details the author's visit to China along with a group of Irish doctors to witness firsthand how the Chinese looked after the health of their people. The group visited Beijing in October 1976. They found that, in China, following Chairman Mao's teachings, there had been an attempt to combine traditional medicine, which includes the use of herbs and remedies such as acupuncture, with modern medicine. By this means, hundreds of thousands of ‘doctors’ who used traditional Chinese methods had been incorporated into the medical system. It also meant that in the country and in the factories, it was possible for the peasants and workers to receive treatment largely independent of modern, and often expensive, drugs.
