This chapter recounts the author's military service during the war. In August 1943, he received his call-up papers to join the Royal Air Force (RAF) as a medical officer with the rank of flying officer. The author describes learning about aviation and tropical medicine, and also details his posting at the RAF station in Waterbeach, Cambridgeshire, where he provided medical care to the aircrews that flew Lancaster bombers in raids over Europe.
